it depends on a bank. In most cases, banks and CU do not make a difference between ACH transfers and direct deposit. I have seen reports that people were able to simulate direct deposit to Meadows CU, Citi and Bank of America using ACH transfers. However, I do not know if these banks have not placed PayPal and ING Direct on their "black lists", that is, lists of FIs from which ACH transfers should not be considered as Direct Deposits. I do not think that they did but you never know...
