#18323 EmigrantDirect rate is starting to fall behind

Posted by MacBanker on 18 December 2005 - 06:05 PM in General

Hi Everyone.

While the Emigrant Direct was a clear leader - same as INGDirect was in 2003 and part of 2004 it seams to fall behind in the past month or two.
Last time before they bumped from 3.5 to 4, they were lagging to few banks for couple of weeks but they jumped over them with the hike to 4 %in September.

But now "the lagging" is lasting much longer and the leap they did in September looks less and less likely.

But if we decide that EmigrantDirect is not the leader anymore and that we need to pick another "Sweeetheart" which bank that would be ?
It doesn't appear that any other bank is the new clear leader for 2006 as Emigrant was in 2005 ?

I wonder what are the current/former Emigrant Direct cutomer opinions on this ?

Thanks

#18321 ACH transfers take 8 days to complete at Netbank

I have noticed my HSBC account transfers always make me loose about 2 days worth of interest (2 for days the money is in neither account) (-2 on my rating scale). I suspect HSBC gains in the interest of the lost 2 days. So although HSBC has free push-pull, I avoid it and use CapOne as much as possible. CapOne has a +1 on my rating scale, as money pulled shows up one day before the money in the other account disappears. Pushed money is only a -1 (if done at optimum time). My limited experience with Emigrant transfers, has not shown better performance than capone. I am looking for another bank that matches CapOne's performance in that area.

It is even worst with EverBank. It is -3 on Pull and haven't tried push yet. I'm affraid I'm gonna loose a lot of interest days so next time I'm going to initiate the trasnfer from Emigrant Direct

#18320 time to lock in some CD's?

Posted by MacBanker on 18 December 2005 - 05:45 PM in General

This question is bugging me for a long time.
To Lock or not to Lock ?

If you folow the US Bond market and the yield curve being flat as it is it is time to consider locking in some of the high yielding CD's. Also some parts of the yield are starting to get inverted - 2 year yields more then 3 or 5 year bonds at the moment.

The market is telling similar story with the different ranges of CD yelds - 1 to 5 year. The difference at most banks between 1 year and 5 year CD's is 10 to 20 basis points.

While these indicators are telling us that it is good idea to lock your money in some of the higher yield CD's looking at the historical graph from bankrate.com for 1 year CD is telling different story. The average yields are going up every week and for sure are not yet toppong out.
So I would wait until we get at least a clear signal that we have so kind of top. And I believe we will have enough time to react since the CD yields are not moving that fast..

But even more important question would be What is the best maturity to "lock in" with these MARKET CONDITIONS and in this ECONOMY ?
I remember kicking my self for not locking in 5 year CD's in 2000 and instead I played "Safe" with 6 month to One year ones.

The difference from the last "recesion" is that we have new Fed President - Bernanke and we have inflation wating to spiral higher.
In case we get to 6 % 2-3 year CD's I think it would be no brainer but at these levels I would still wait a little longer.

If not for something else the internet bankgin became very competitive, and banks are scrambling to lure new costumers with higher and higer rates.

Found this nice deal at a local Cooperative Bank.
They are offering a Passbook saving account at 4.07% with 25K Min. Rate guaranteed till 05/01/2006. Might only be good as a local deal, Located just North of Boston, as I don't know if you must go in for a Passbook account. Also offering a 8 month CD at 4.5%. Another plus is they have SIF which covers any amount over FDIC, Might now be time to take some $$ out of ING to open with them

Hi scottjm.

I also opened Everbank FreeNet Checking few weeks ago.
Many products that noone arround has (Currency CD's Gold and S&P CD's) but aI noticed several saviungs issues.

1. Incoming transfers triggered by Everbank take 4 days. example transfer was issued on Monday, funds dissapeared on the other account on Tuesday and appeared on Everbank Account on Friday.
2. They have strange way of calculating the Average Balance. The account was funded by check on 11/28 with 5K and on the statement says I have 3 interest bearing days but the Average balance for those 3 days is only $1,666.00. The counted 0 for 28th and 29th and full ammount of 5 K only for 30th ?!?

Have you noticedsimilar issues on your side. Have you tried ach initiated from external account ? How fast is it ?

Thanks
